I absolutely bloody love the Pixies, so I jumped at the chance to shoot their return to Manchester for the debut of their seventh studio album, Beneath The Eerie.
I'd only previously had the one opportunity to photograph Black Francis and co. and that occasion was an outdoor show with quite a bit of daylight, so I didn't really know how tough the show was going to be to shoot.
On the topic of expectations, we also weren't sure what songs we were due to be greeted with. I had my fingers crossed for one of the early hits to make an appearance in our three song allocation - It always makes shooting that bit more fun when you can sing along! I checked out the setlists from previous dates online whilst waiting for the band to take the stage, and the opening three tracks varied on pretty much every show.
Francis, Joey, Dave and Paz took the stage to a huge roar from the sold-out Apollo, and Paz got the evening underway with a bass intro that instantly got the crowd - and me - absolutely buzzing. It was only bloody "Debaser", wasn't it?! My favourite bloody Pixies song! Safe to say my shots from the first song weren't great, as I was having far too much fun!
It was great to get back in the 'pit after festival season - I've missed my Manchester photo buddies!
