What a way to kick off 2019! I had the pleasure of catching The Wombats' Leeds Arena debut, and it was a great show to shoot.
As my 10th year as a music photographer came to a close, I became acutely aware of myself 'going through the motions' when shooting some shows. After so long, there's only so much you can do in three songs from the pit, and I was fearful of my work becoming formulaic or mundane. With that in mind, I was keen that I start 2019 capturing something different - something a bit more dynamic, more engaging. I wanted to be driving home with shots I'd be proud of again.
Thankfully, this show was to provide plenty of opportunities, with plenty going on - confetti cannons, giant balloons, great lighting, and a wisdom of actual* wombats. (Yes, the collective noun for wombats is a 'wisdom'. Cool eh? Yes, I did Google it.)
I had a fantastic time shooting this show, and it certainly re-energised myself for the year ahead. Huge thanks to Simon and the rest of the crew for being so accommodating.
Great start, 2019. More of the same, please :)
*'course they weren't real. It was some folk in costumes. Obviously.
